Location

Myton is located near west central Duchesne County; ten miles northeast of Roosevelt and twenty miles west of Duchesne.

Myton is situated at 40 degrees latitude and 100 degrees longitude. It sits at an average elevation of 5,270 feet above sea level. The land slopes from southwest to northeast and west to east, providing drainage in a northeast direction. The city is surrounded by the Ute Indian Reservation.

Settlement

On July 31st, 1905, the land area known as Myton was set aside by President Theodore Roosevelt as official government Townsite.

Myton was first incorporated as a Town on April 25, 1912. By October 28th, 1927 the town had grown large enough to be incorporated as a City of the third class, the population requirements being different in the early days.

Population

The population in Myton varies between 500 to 550 people. About 65% of these people are low income; 15% are senior citizens and 16% are minorities. We are the third largest and the third smallest city in Duchesne County.

Annual Precipitation

The annual precipitation in Myton is under ten inches, giving the area a semi- arid classification. Much of the rainfall occurs during the April to October growing season. The area is subject to thunderstorms in the early spring. The location of Myton is such that flooding presents no major problem, however, parts of the city are on the State flood plains list, and some residents have been encouraged or required to buy flood insurance. Possibility of flooding exists if the Starvation Reservoir northeast of Duchesne ( about 30 miles away) were to burst and send a huge volume of water down the Duchesne River.

Police Protection

Myton City currently has a contract with the County for police protection. The city secured grants to reimburse the County for this protection.

Fire Protection

Myton's Fire Department is 100% volunteer. It has about 15 members that service the city as well as the surrounding area. They have a fast response unit, a pumper truck and a water truck and a nice new fire house to keep their equipment in.

Recreation

Myton has a park that we now call "the little park" as opposed to the baseball park that is I guess the "big" park. We use both parks on Myton Daze which is our annual Myton celebration. The little park is often used for picnics and Bar-B-Qs and is located on Main Street behind City Hall.

Housing

Adequate housing has been an on going goal for the past 15 years. Many sub-standard houses have been removed and replaced and many more have been rehabilitated in the past years under the State's rehab program. In addition many new houses have been built recently.
